Connor McDavid may have lost some teeth.

Ouch.

The Edmonton Oilers are having a pretty bad start to their afternoon.

After having a goal called back during an important game against a very tough Carolina Hurricanes team, the Oilers have now lost their best player for the time being. Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid suffered an injury of some sort on the day when he was the victim of a high stick courtesy of Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brady Skjei as he was looking to split the Hurricanes defense and get his team back into the game.

As McDavid was trying to drive through the two Hurricanes defenders, Skjei took a pretty careless swing with his stick and the result proved disastrous for McDavid. Skjei's swinging stick appeared to catch McDavid right in the mouth, causing the Oilers captain to immediately clutch at his face and mouth. McDavid, who normally doesn't go overboard trying to sell injuries, was hunched over in pain as he continued to clutch at his face.

In fact it seemed as though McDavid was in disbelief as he held his hand over his face as he skated off the ice and all the way back to the Oilers' locker room. Due to the fact that his glove obscured vision of the injury he received as a result of being struck in the face by Skjei's stick, it's hard to tell exactly how bad the damage is at this time.

That being said the Oilers' broadcast crew that was covering the game for Sportsnet has speculated that McDavid went back to the locker room for some dental work. This would leave me to believe that the broadcast crew believes that McDavid has suffered some damage to his teeth, although we are awaiting an official update from the Oilers before we confirm anything as a certainty.

One thing is certain though and that is that whatever happened to McDavid it must have been relatively significant in terms of the damage it did. In spite of the fact that there was more than half of the period left to play on the game clock, McDavid did not emerge from the locker room.

Here's a look at the incident:

Update: McDavid is back, but his teeth appear to have indeed taken a beating.
