McDavid claims one of The Great One's records as his own.

Wayne Gretzky is considered by many to be the greatest player to ever play the sport of hockey and one of the major reasons for that designation are the many records he holds in the National Hockey League. Many of those records are considered to be untouchable and I certainly doubt we will see many of them broken during my lifetime, so for that reason it is always a big deal when a player manages to overtake The Great One.

On Saturday night, during a tough loss to Canadian rivals the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid did just that when he surpassed a record previously held by #99. McDavid recorded his 58th powerplay point of the regular season when he helped set up Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl for what would prove to be his third goal of the night, earning him a hat trick in the process.

No player in an Oilers uniform has ever recorded more points on the power play in a single season, not even The Great One himself who had previously set the record during the 1981-82 regular season.
