Edmonton Oilers superfan Ben Stelter passed away almost two weeks ago after a bout with glioblastoma — a form of brain cancer. The kid was only six years old…
Back on March 24, Stelter had joined the Oilers for their pregame skate and then celebrated with the team in the dressing room, following Edmonton’s win over the San Jose Sharks. He was awarded a game MVP helmet. He continued showing up to support the Oilers, who at one point, won 10 consecutive games with Stelter in attendance. He captured the hearts of all fans with his cries to “play La Bamba” after wins and developed a clos relationship with captain Connor McDavid.
The Oilers’ organization has been mourning and on Friday, McDavid traveled from Ontario to celebrate Ben’s life in Edmonton. He and his girlfriend Lauren made the trip and drove in a procession.
McDavid wore the Ben jersey (which Ben signed), that was gifted to the captain. The jersey also featured a “B” on the chest in place of McDavid’s usual “C” insignia.
McDavid shared moving thoughts and memories of Ben’s life when he spoke about his friend a few days following his passing.
“Obviously I just fell in love with him right away, and the entire family,” McDavid said. “We just developed that relationship over the course of the year. I just loved being around him.”
We understand why it was important for McDavid to attend the procession and funeral in honour of his young friend, gone way too soon.
