Connor Hellebuyck responds to choking allegations after Game 4.
Hellebuyck faces the media after two terrible performances in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Winnipeg Jets have allowed the St. Louis Blues back into their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series in a major way and many have been quick to point the finger of blame for that reality in the direction of Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
There's no denying the fact that Hellebuyck has been underwhelming so far in the playoffs, especially when compared to his performances in the regular season, with Hellebuyck boasting an abysmal 4.24 goals against average and an equally abysmal .817 save percentage through the first 4 games of the series. Hellebuyck has also been pulled from the net in each to the last 2 games, leading many to once again label him as a playoff choker.
Hellebuyck faced the media on Monday and addressed those concerns head on, with the Jets goaltender defiant despite his struggles.
"You don't love giving up that many goals but we're 2-2 in the series and all that matters is winning the next one," said Hellebuyck. "Am I gonna be better? I am gonna be better."
Hellebuyck would continue his answer and made some odd comments about his focus on goaltending.
"I've studied goaltending extremely hard," said Hellebuyck. "I've probably studied the most out of anyone in this world so I know what to do and how to get my best game."
The natural follow up question would have been to ask why he wasn't able to do so in the Jets' two previous games, but unfortunately that question wasn't asked. Hellebuyck continued to talk about his game during the scrum, with his tone defensive much of the time.
"You don't win 47 games and then come the playoffs and switch everything up," said Hellebuyck. "I know how it needs to look and I like a lot of things. I'm not gonna go and make huge changes, that being said I'm gonna better."
While Hellebuyck remains confident it seems more than fair to suggest that the confidence in his ability to perform from those on the outside looking in has definitely been shaken.
