Say what now?!

A lot of words come to mind when fans, pundits and insiders describe first overall pick Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks. I mean the kid is a generational talent that is expected to become the face of the NHL in the next years!
However, he is also known to be extremely humble and modest, and it was once again exhibited when his mother Melanie was interviewed by the Athletic. While she talked about her son’s development and his process from his Bantam days to junior hockey, and now to the first overall pick in 2023, Melanie acknowledges how she raised a humble boy despite the ongoing pressure he’s been under for years.
Even when Melanie and husband Tom asked their son about the Blackhawks facing the Pittsburgh Penguins on opening night in early October and facing his idol Sidney Crosby in the face-off circle, Bedard brushes the questions aside and shocks them by answering:
“I still have to make the team.”
Are you kidding, Connor? Of course he’s making the team! Melanie herself seems to know it, admitting how a Blackhawks veteran has already has reached out, offering to take him in.
Bedard has posted back-to-back 100-point seasons with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League, and figures to make an immediate impact for his new team in 2023-24. The Blackhawks would be simply the dumbest franchise of the planet if he’s not on the roster come October.
You have to admire the 18-year-old. Not only for his exceptional talent on the ice, but also for his grounded and humble attitude.
You’ve got a winner there Chicago!
