Connor Bedard may have collected his first NHL point in his debut on Tuesday night, he also earned his first fine for breaking a league rule. Before puck drop, the first overall pick took the ice prior to his debut and the famous rookie lap, but went without his helmet, choosing to let his flow fly into the wind in Pittsburgh.

The NHL enacted a rule last season that requires all players who joined the league in the past four years to wear helmets in warm-ups. From Rule 9.6.:

“It is mandatory for all players who entered the NHL beginning with the 2019-2020 season or later to wear their helmet during pre-game warm-up.”

The Chicago Blackhawks new star safely completed he rookie lap and put on his helmet for the game, but will need to pay the $2,500 fine for going bucket-less for his first career warmup.

I feel like it’s a right of passage for players entering the NHL to enjoy their first warmup without their helmets and Bedard knew it was worth every penny of the fine to enjoy the wind in his flow for the first time in his career.

It was quite the night for Bedard and the Blackhawks who got the 4-2 win over the Penguins. Bedard played 21 minutes and 29 seconds, registered five shots on goals.
