Connor Bedard has been a highlight reel on skates during his record-setting run for Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship. Fans and players across the National Hockey League cannot wait to see what he does next tonight against the United States in the semifinals at Scotiabank Centre.
Bedard has received high praise from his teammates, coaches and even NHLers. Seattle Kraken’s Jordan Eberle, whose goal record of 15 was beat by the projected first overall pick this summer, has been watching in awe at the young player.
“You could almost feel [the overtime goal] coming with the amount of chances he had before the goal,” Eberle said. “He’s one of those players you turn on the TV to watch. He’s that explosive and dangerous. Every time he gets the puck, fans get on their feet. It’s been really enjoyable to watch.”
While Eberle’s former teammate in Edmonton, Oilers captain Connor McDavid has enjoyed watching Bedard at the tournament, he admitted how he was surprised at his choice of play in overtime against Slovakia in the quarterfinals Monday.
“He’s such a great shooter and you’re screaming at the TV for him to shoot it, but he can obviously make those plays as well,” McDavid said. “It was really impressive.
“Beautiful goal at a big time, that’s what big players dream of doing and he got a chance to do that and it was really cool to see.”
McDavid shared how he’s run into Bedard a couple of times in the past, both training under Gary Roberts, but has not reached out to the talented prospect since “he certainly seems to know what he’s doing, and doesn’t need to hear it from me.”
We all can’t wait to see what Bedard does tonight in this crucial game against USA.
