Concerning situation emerges in Pittsburgh that puts job in jeopardy...
What will the Penguins do?
HockeyFeed
The Pittsburgh Penguins were seen as top contenders for the 2023-24 season when they made significant changes in the offseason, most notably adding Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson to their roster. The star defenseman was expected to come in and play a huge part as a driving force on the Penguins’ lineup, especially as a power-play quarterback on the back end. However, the Pens aren’t producing at all on the man advantage, scoreless a power-play goal in its past 11 games, going 0-for-29, per Bob Grove. He points out that 11 games ties a franchise long stretch of game without a goal with the extra man on the ice. The last time the Penguins hit 11 games without a power play goal was in 2019 when they went 0-25 in opportunities.
Pittsburgh therefore has the NHL’s third-worst power play at 10.5 percent, better only than St. Louis (9.9 percent) and Washington (7.8 percent). Through 24 games played, the Penguins have scored only seven power play goals in 67 attempts; sitting 30th in the NHL.
Some fans and pundits are even starting to wonder if the Penguins’ struggles on the power-play could lead to a coaching change if things do not improve.
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan’s job could be in jeopardy if Pittsburgh starts trailing behind and losing important in the competitive Metropolitan Division. The Pens’ record of 3-4-3 in their past 10 games has become a concern and could be one more argument to show Sullivan the door.
The Penguins are in action later tonight where they will face off against the Lightning in Tampa Bay.
We’re hoping to see some improvements tonight, especially on the man advantage, or else Sullivan could have one more toe out the door with the Penguins turning to a new head coach to get the team’s PP back on track…
