This can’t be true?!

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be getting back on track after holding on to their lead over the Calgary Flames on Thursday and putting an end to their four game losing streak thanks to a 4-3 win at the Saddledome.

However, insider Elliotte Friedman shared a new point of view on Friday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, in which he believes the Maple Leafs aren’t as focused on becoming Stanley Cup champions this season, looking at the bigger picture and the future in Toronto.

This is what the insider reports from the rumblings in Toronto and the feeling ahead of the postseason.

“I think Toronto is thinking bigger picture, I don’t think this is about this year anymore, I think they’re thinking about where they are going. I really wonder if deep down, that as an organization they’re saying, we are not good enough to win this year..

“We are re-setting and reshaping our roster and we’re going to do that.”

Many times this season, the Maple Leafs have been labelled as the Stanley Cup favourite, though it got rocky when goalie Ilya Samsonov was back struggling between the pipes and the rest of the team couldn’t hold on to a lead. Ahead of Friday’s action however, Toronto remains third in the Atlantic division with a safe spot in the postseason with a record of 22-13-8 and a total of 52 points.

It will be easier to determine if general manager Brad Treviling sees this season as as win-now and going big or going home ahead of the trade deadline. I’m not sure this is the time to sacrifice further draft capital, or prospects at this time…

And maybe that’s where the rumbling are coming from too in Toronto…
