The rivalry between Canadian clubs is always intense. However, it can also be put aside and Calgary Flames’ Nikita Zadorov showed the best way to do it when he dedicated his Hockey fights cancer message towards Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov ahead of Thursday night’s game.
Last week, it was announced by the Maple Leafs that Amirov had to return home to Russia in order to undergo additional treatments after being diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year.
“Rodion Amirov has returned home and is with his family,” his agent Dan Milstein said in a statement. “Unfortunately, at the moment Rodion cannot train, as he is undergoing additional treatments. We would like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs and Salavat Yulaev Ufa for their incredible support and willingness to do everything necessary for Rodion’s comfort.”
Right away, fans and players shared their thoughts and prayers to Rodion in this new challenge.
And what Zadorov did with his sign proves that life is bigger than hockey and rivalries on the ice.
The Maple Leafs announced last February that Amirov, who was selected 15th overall in the 2020 draft, had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. He has not played since he was shut down at the time for the remainder of Salavat Yulaev Ufa’s 2021-22 season.
We too wish him all the best and want to fight cancer for him.
