Capitals unveil their new jerseys as a surprise birthday gift for Alex Ovechkin
Happy 39th birthday, Ovi! Hope you like nostalgia!
This just in, the Washington Capitals are bringing back 'The Screaming Eagle'.
The team's vintage black, blue and gold jerseys complete with eagle logo are making a comeback in 2024-25 and the team used captain Alex Ovechkin to help them make the announcement. The Capitals shared a video on social media this morning that featured Ovechkin opening a surprise 39th birthday gift... a brand new Screaming Eagle uni.

This uniform, of course, was the first Capitals jersey that Ovechkin wore in the NHL during his rookie campaign in 2005-06. The team used this opportunity to recreate a famous Ovi shot from his rookie season.

Oh, we are sooooooo back!
You know, personally I prefer the Capitals in their red, white and blue jerseys but I am a sucker for nostalgia though. The more traditional red, white and blue jerseys are obviously a nod to being the NHL's representatives in the Nation's Capital, even if the logo is a little uninspired. I personally love the eagle logo, but I'm not so crazy on the muted colors of the jersey. I loved when the team combined both their classic looks for the Reverse Retro trend that we saw a couple years ago.
Remember these?
Noooooow we're talkin'!
I'm also a big fan of the Capitol Building logo that the team has used as a secondary logo throughout their existence. You know the one, it's an eagle stylized in the letter 'W' with the Capitol Building in the negative space of the logo.
This bad boy:
That's a damn near perfect logo, in my mind. I'd love to see the team utilize it as a primary logo in the future.
In any case, the logo is back, Ovi is 39 and what's old is once again young. Hopefully the captain receives some youthful energy as a result of this switch up and he goes back to scoring 50 goals and 100 points, like he did in his rookie season way back in 2005-06.
