Capitals forced to offer update on Alex Ovechkin’s “headspace” amidst drought

The Caps’ superstar is in the throes of the longest goal drought of his career.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has gone 10 games without a goal and has just five goals in 25 games. This means that he’s currently on pace to finish with under 20 for the first time in his career.

And fans are talking. It could be why Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery felt the need to address the situation on Wednesday following team practice, ahead of Thursday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers.

“He’s in a good headspace,” Carbery said, per team insider Sammi Silber of the Hockey News. “He feels as confident as ever and knows that it’s only a matter of time before some of these chances start falling for him.”

On Sunday, the Capitals got the win over the Chicago Blackhawks, but Ovechkin failed to find the back of the net, which marked the 10th straight game that he went goalless.

When it comes to the cause of Ovechkin’s woes, even Carbery does not seem to have an answer. He is just hoping his captain gets back on track sooner rather than later. As for Ovi's teammates, they do not seem worried either.

"Once he finds the back of the net, it could be a 10-game stretch where he's just scoring and scoring," Connor McMichael said. "You never want to count him out, and I don't think it'd be a smart idea to do that."

There is a worry that Ovechkin might be dealing with a lingering injury. Last season he dealt with a couple of ailments and admitted to enjoying an extended offseason for better recovery. Could he still be dealing with some pain or nagging aliment?

Let’s see if that good headspace can get one in the back of the opposite net!
