Capitals blowout Blue Jackets 5-0... in the first period.
The Washington Capitals are smashing the Blue Jackets and it's only been 20 minutes.
The Washington Capitals are delivering one of the most one-sided performances of the 2024-25 National Hockey League regular season thus far on Saturday, and they've only played 20 minutes of hockey so far.
The Capitals welcomed, if you can still call it that, the Columbus Blue Jackets to Capital One Arena in Washington on Saturday and proceeded to utterly dominate them through the first 20 minutes of play. The Capitals would go off on an offensive barrage through the first period, beating goaltender Daniil Tarasov 5 times on just 11 shots, leaving Tarasov with an almost comical save percentage of .455 through 20 minutes of play.
Here is a look at just some of the goals scored by the Capitals in the first period:
The Capitals got off to a very early lead including this goal, the second of the game for Washington, from Connor McMichael less than 2 minutes into the game.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is getting in on the fun with Ovi already picking up points in the period, but he would add a goal as well when he scored Washington's 4th of the period roughly three quarters of the way through the opening frame.
That goal was number 859 for Ovi which inches him ever closer to the all-time NHL record currently held by Wayne Gretzky (894), putting Ovechkin just 35 goals away from tying that record and only 36 goals away from owning the record himself.
This one has been tough to watch through 20 minutes, especially if you're a Blue Jackets fan.
