Canucks’ Tyler Myers’ knee blows out following awkward collision

The defenseman was in visible pain and had to be carried off the ice in Vancouver.

The start of the game against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers wasn’t a great one for the Vancouver Cancuks. In the first period, defenseman Tyler Myers went to body check Flyers’ Joel Farabee, but the hit ended up being a weird collision near the boards and it was obvious that Tyler fell awkwardly. When his teammates and the officials saw he was not getting back up, they knew something was wrong and play was stopped. Myers stayed down for a while, clutching his knee and staying motionless on the ice.

On the replay, we can see that Myers’ leg bends in an unnatural manner as he locks and then twists his knee, which appears to suffer the most from the impat. The tall blue liner had to be helped and carried off the ice and could not put any weight on his right leg.

Here is what happened on Vancouver ice:

This is a significant blow for the Canucks’ defense, especially on the right side tonight, as Vincent Desharnais, who signed to a two-year, $4 million contract in the summer, was already a healthy scratch for this game.

It’s likely we will get a better update on Myers after the game or even tomorrow once he’s been evaluated. If he has to miss the next game, scheduled for Tuesday against the Lightning in Tampa, Desharnais could draw back in and it could be possible that Mark Friedman will be recalled from AHL Abbotsford.
