Canucks president Jim Rutherford confirms 'major' changes are coming.

The Canucks president faces the music.

The Vancouver Canucks are a mess and although they did manage to pick up a big win for embattled Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau on Sunday night over the Carolina Hurricanes, there's no sign of the mess getting cleaned up any time soon.

On Monday, Canucks team president Jim Rutherford was forced to face the music when he faced some tough questions from members of the assembled media on a variety of topics from the treatment of Canucks forward Tanner Person all the way to the potential moves that lie ahead of the National Hockey League's trade deadline.

The most pressing topic was perhaps the handling of the Pearson situation given that there may be repercussions down the line given that the National Hockey League Players' Association is now involved in the matter. Rutherford acknowledged that he has yet to speak to the NHLPA, but did add that the Canucks were comfortable with how things went.

"If there was any wrongdoing, we want to get it right going forward," said Rutherford on Monday.

That was somewhat positive from Rutherford but unfortunately that would be where the positivity would end. On the topic of Canucks captain Bo Horvat, Rutherford stated that the team had taken their best shot at signing Horvat while adding that he felt the offer wasn't commiserate to market value. This came off very much like an announcement that Horvat's time in Vancouver has all but come to an end.

"We're in a pickle here," said Rutherford of the Horvat situation.

Rutherford himself has been the target of much criticism since coming on board as president of hockey operations for the Canucks. Not only has the job he himself has done with the roster itself been put under a microscope, but Rutherford has also faced backlash for some of the public comments he made about Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau.

On Monday, Rutherford acknowledge that he was "disappointed" with the job that he has done so far, a sentiment that I suspect will resonate within the Canucks fan base.

On top of that though, Rutherford also revealed that he believes this team now needs "major surgery" to once again become competitive, something he admitted he did not expect when taking the job.

"All of the core players aren't going to end up being here," admitted Rutherford

The comments that are likely to cause the most backlash however were once again on the topic of head coach Bruce Boudreau. Rutherford flat out confirmed the rumors that he has been actively seeking a replacement for Boudreau, something that has been rumored for many weeks now.

“All I can say is Bruce is our coach right now," said Rutherford while adding that he has been in contact with potential replacements for months now.
