Canucks insider Botchford’s death caused by overdose of cocaine and fentanyl

Back in May 2019, the world of hockey was shocked to find out that Vancouver Canucks team insider Jason Botchford had died at the young age of 48 of an apparent heart failure. 

On Friday, Jason’s stepfather John Lott released a statement on behalf of Jason’s wife, Kathryn Botchford and his family, sharing the report of the coroner’s office on the cause of death. 

The family therefore shared that Jason died on an accidental drug overdose of cocaine and fentanyl. 

They are in complete disbelief of the reason behind Jason’s death, though it does not change what he meant for them and the person he was throughout his life. 

They are still grieving. 

The popular sportswriter started at The Province as a news reporter in 2005 but quickly moved into sports and covered the Canucks until he left for The Athletic in the summer of 2018.

He also worked in radio for TSN 1040 and made regular appearances on TSN’s That’s Hockey.

He is remembered by many fans, especially in Vancouver, and of course by his family, his wife and children Sienna, Keira and Hudson; his brother, Derek Botchford, sister-in-law Andrea Soto and nephews Nolan and Miles; and his stepfather, John Lott. He was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Lott, in 2016, and his father, Henry Botchford, in 2018.
