Canucks attempt difficult trade that break fans’ hearts…

The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly trying to move on from a contract that eating up cap space and Frank Seravalli of Daily Face-Off believes the Canadian team has “in recent days and weeks been attempting to move the contract of Micheal Ferland.”

Back in 2019, Ferland was not part of the Canucks’ active roster last year and was then placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) to start the 2020-21 season and has remained on there since, with his last game played on Dec, 10, 2019. All because of a frightening concussion history, one he had even before he signed in Vancouver, as he suffered another concussion just 12 games into the 2019-20 season during a fight with Kyle Clifford, who was a member of the Los Angeles Kings at the time. Ferland attempted to return to action on three occasions, but was forced to leave each time with “concussion-like symptoms.” He returned for the postseason in the summer of 2020, but the symptoms were back as well.
Fans feel for Ferland, who’s always been admired by fans for his fearless attitude and grit on the ice. He’s also inspired many with his successful battle against alcoholism.

Ferland is likely to retire once his deal comes to an end. That contract expires at the end of the upcoming 2022-23 season, on which Ferland earns $2.75 million in actual cash.

The Canucks are looking for clubs interested in operating in LTIR and could attempt to make a move and let go of Ferland. However, Vancouver could run in a potential problem, seeing that Ferland’s contract isn’t insured.

“The thing with Ferland’s contract though that I think has gotten in the way of some of this is that because Ferland is out with injury, it’s not insured, so whoever’s picking up that deal would be paying the full $2.75 million in real cash. The Canucks are obviously trying to get rid of it because they don’t want to pay that and they don’t want to operate in LTIR, so they’re probably going to have to pay a little bit to move it, but we’ll see how that unfolds.

“Maybe there’s a team out there that says ‘You know what, this is a situation that might benefit us a bit to be operating in LTIR if we are starting this season with some short term injuries that may not last the whole year, that would give us a little bit of a cushion.’ So just something to keep an eye on, Micheal Ferland’s contract. We’ve seen some other teams this summer [do this], like the Montreal Canadiens trading Shea Weber’s contract, so there are teams out there that have been trying to do it.”

And so while he is not expected to play anymore, Ferland could still be on the move…
