Canadian players disgusted with officiating in Gold Medal game.
Several players express their disappointment.
The Gold Medal game at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship ended with some controversy on Sunday, and following the game members of Team Canada expressed their frustration regarding the officiating that many feel played a significant factor in the outcome of this game.
One of the player's involved in the controversial finish to the game was Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot. Chabot was representing Canada as the team's captain in this tournament and was called for a penalty in overtime that he obviously feels was a bit soft. Chabot initially expressed his frustration with how everything ended after a hard fought tournament for the Canadian players.
"Yeah for sure," said Chabot in response to being asked about an emotional game as per TSN. "Obviously the way it ends it's unfortunate, it's not something you want to see."
When he was asked about the controversial call in overtime though, Chabot didn't hold back. The veteran National Hockey League defenseman effectively accused Finnish forward Hannes Bjorninen of taking a dive, while also acknowledging that he didn't help his own cause.
"I mean, I think it's pretty obvious that the guy, he clearly threw himself, but I mean at the end of the day my stick was in there and I put myself in that position. It's a hockey call, everything happens quick, but obviously I think everybody can agree it was a bit of a dive I think."
Winnipeg Jets forward Pierre Luc Dubois was perhaps even more frustrated than Chabot believe it or not and he did not hold back.
"It sucks, I mean.... it sucks," said an exasperated sounding Dubois as per TSN.
Although he didn't quite go so far as to say as much, Dubois also seemed to think the call in overtime was questionable.
"To lose in overtime of a game on a penalty that's... it sucks," said Dubois seemingly cutting himself off before he said something he might regret.
"I mean you work so hard and for it to be decided like that it sucks," he said again shaking his head. "You know when we come to these tournaments it's different rules but at some point it's frustrating. You don't even know the rulebook anymore."
Dubois almost seemed to be in disbelief at what he was currently feeling.
"To put that much effort and then for that to happen in overtime of a Gold Medal game... yeah," said Dubois once again cutting himself off.
It would appear that the sentiments of the players who participated in this game reflect those of the many Canadians who took to social media following the conclusion of this game to express their displeasure with the officiating throughout the Gold Medal game.
"You can argue the OT call, that was the referee’s judgement, but the high-sticking call that put Finland on the 5 on 3 in the third period was indisputably wrong," said Gord Miller on Sunday. "Maybe time to look at expanding the coach’s challenge to include incidents where something clearly didn’t happen."
This is going to be a tough loss for many Canadians, players and fans alike, to swallow.
