Bruins call up enforcer as they try to turn their season around.
The Boston Bruins have called up a player best known for taking on all challengers.
The Boston Bruins have won just 8 of their first 19 games this season and a little desperation may be starting to set in despite it still being relatively early in the season.
On Monday morning, the Bruins announced a move that has raised a few eyebrows when they made the decision to call up enforcer Jeffrey Viel from the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins.
Viel, a forward, isn't exactly the kind of player you call up to jump start your offense but is instead more known as a fearless competitor that has shown throughout his career that he is willing to take on all challengers. In spite of having only a combined 49 games in the National Hockey League under his belt, spread across 3 seasons, Viel has already taken on some truly notable names during his time in the big league.
That list of notable names includes none other than former Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who Viel took on when he was a member of the San Jose Sharks and Chara was playing for the New York Islanders in the latter stages of his career.
Viel also dropped the gloves with New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba while Viel was again playing for the San Jose Sharks, showing a clear willingness to take on players who have established themselves with reputations as guys you probably don't want to mess with in the NHL.
Perhaps his most notable contest at the NHL level however was a clash with Sam Carrick of the Anaheim Ducks, a spirited affair that saw both men landing some heavy shots and one that left Carrick's face a mess when it was all said and done.
