To say that Bruce Boudreau is not happy with the effort shown by his team so far in the 2022-23 National Hockey League season might be a bit of an understatement.
On Saturday night, Boudreau and the Canucks suffered their 6th consecutive loss of the season and while we are still only in the Month of October, there are already concerns that this team may be throwing any hopes of being a contender down the drain. The Canucks fell down early with the Sabres taking a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of action, but the Canucks showed some life in the second period when they brought the game back to within just a single goal. That was before the team's complete collapse and capitulation in the third period, where the Sabres rattled off 3 unanswered goals to eventually blow out the Canucks by a score of 5-1.
Although there are no doubt many reasons for Boudreau's frustration at this time, it appears that it was that effort, or lack thereof, in the third period that really rubbed the Canucks head coach the wrong way. Following the game Boudreau would spare no thoughts for his player's feelings, calling them out quite publicly and chastising them for the effort they put out in the third period. Boudreau would even go a step further by pointing out that if any team should have been motivated to win in the third, it should have been the team with 5 straight loses to start the season.
“I don’t get how a team that hasn’t won a game, and you have a good second period, can come out in the third and play with very little effort," said Boudreau following the game. "I’m seeing what you’re seeing.”
Of course there is an argument to be made here that Boudreau should be holding himself accountable, given that it is a head coach's job to motivate his players on the ice. That being said there is only so much a coach can do to prepare his team properly, and very little he can do once the players are actually out on the ice and playing the game.
