Matthew Tkachuk wasn’t on the ice to see the Vegas Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup final against his Florida Panthers in Game 5 of the final on Tuesday. Instead, he was nursing a fractured sternum, head coach Paul Maurice told reporters after the loss.
Tkachuk suffered the injury in Game 3 of the series, but still ended up playing the fourth contest despite the brutal injury.
According to ESPN’s John Buccigross, Tkachuk had to be helped out of bed by brother Brady prior to Game 4. The injury was so bad that Tkachuk’s teammates had to help him put his equipment on.
In that fatal Game 3 in which he suffered the broken sternum, Tkachuk left the contest following a big hit, but returned to force overtime with the tying goal late in the third period. It ended up being the only Panthers’ victory of the series.
Tkachuk put up 11 goals and 13 assists in 20 games in the postseason and was one of the key players for the Panthers on their run to the Stanley Cup Final.
He certainly deserves a vacation!
