Brady Tkachuk causes controversy with a good deed.

Brady Tkachuk performed a good deed on Sunday afternoon... or did he?

They say that no good deed goes unpunished and that may be the case for Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk on Sunday.

Tkachuk is receiving both praise and criticism for a good deed that he performed on Sunday, although admittedly much more praise than criticism, during a game between the Senators and New Jersey Devils.

Roughly midway through the game's second period, Tkachuk appeared to take a stick to the face from New Jersey Devils forward Tomas Hertl, but after the official's arm came up Tkachuk did something truly unusual. Tkachuk began to wave off the official who was looking to call the penalty, telling him that there actually had been no contact on the play.

As a result the officials would huddle and discuss the call, eventually deciding that there was no penalty on the play.

Here's a look at how it all went down:

Many have been quick to praise Tkachuk for showing a great deal of sportsmanship in having the penalty called off, including a number of fans and pundits alike.

Tkachuk however had reacted as though he had been struck in the face initially, which is likely what led to the call in the first place, and some have called him out for embellishment or diving rather than for the good deed that followed.

The implication there is of course that Tkachuk didn't wave off the call because of good sportsmanship, but rather because he didn't want to get himself into trouble with the National Hockey League, and perhaps more importantly the NHL's on-ice officials, for embellishment.
