It was opening day for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ training camp on Wednesday and general manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media about the work he’s underdone this summer to improve his new team’s roster and what is left to be done.
When asked about adding enforcer Ryan Reaves, gritty wingers Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi and bruising defenseman Simon Benoit to the Maple Leafs, Treliving admitted how he regreats one thing about his summer’s additions. He wishes he never used the word snot when talking about their playing quality

Bringing a little piss and vinegar. Or snot, I guess everyone’s been saying,” Leafs forward had said earlier this summer, echoing what Treliving has mentioned about the new players when he said the Maple Leafs needed a little more snot to their game.

On Wednesday, he laughed with regret about the words he used to talk about Reaves, Bertuzzi and Domi.

“I should probably have never used the word snot, I’ve heard a lot about that,” Treliving joked. “I don’t know if it was about remaking the identity, as much as it’s, I firmly believe there’s a style you need to play at the very most important times. It’s as much a mentality as it is anything else. I know there’s been lots of talk about the abrasiveness. These are also good players. To me they’re players that can play inside, get to areas that are hard to get to when the games matter the most…we’ve all watched games in April, May and June. It didn’t change 10 years ago, and it’s not going to change in 10 years. There’s no space, it’s a harder game, you’ve got to fight through traffic, and so the more players you can have with that mentality and that skill set, I think it helps you.”

There is no doubt that the three aforementioned forwards are accustomed to physicality and will make the Maple Leafs tougher to play against.

Toronto will show a different personality on the ice and if snots comes with, so be it.
