Brad Marchand calls out the NHL: “Teams are kinda getting screwed!”

Pointless?

There is no question that Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand can be vocal. Sometimes what he says is not useful to the game, however on Thursday, the message he sent to the league and commissioner Gary Bettman was right on the money.

There needs to be a change to the playoff format.

Last week at the GMs meeting in Florida, stubborn Bettman stated that the current format “is working well.” From 1993 to 2013, the NHL had three divisions in each conference, with the three division winners grabbing the top three seeds. After that, it was just based on overall points, with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No, 5. The teams would also re-seed after the first round. Several players and general managers have expressed the desire to use that format once again, but Bettman said no at the GMs meeting.

But many star players do not like it and would prefer to used the previous format, and Marchand is one of them.

“Teams are kinda getting screwed."

“You have the top-3 teams in one division. You have three teams that should be going deep, [two] are playing against each other in the first round. … So I think we should go back to the one versus eight.”

Back in May 2022, the commissioner had already stated that the league had no interest in expanding the playoff format to include more teams or games, but it was recently made official that no changes will come at all.

Marchand doesn’t believe it is fair, and for a rare occasion, we agree with him.
