He opened up like never before:

In July, it was reported that Bobby Ryan was arrested at the Nashville International Airport where a store alleged that Ryan had taken items and left without paying and alerted Airport Police. Officers then found him seated at the bar of the Little Harpeth Brewing ordering a drink. The report indicates that Ryan was not compliant and was inebriated, so much so that he did not know where he was, the date, or the time, and could not stand on his own. He was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail and charged with public intoxication.
After the humiliating relapse that led to his arrest, Ryan took to social media to thank people who sent him messages. He has been taking one day at at time into his recovery and on Wednesday, he was a guest on the Wally and Methot Show and shared private details on what took place and how he is currently doing.
In a lengthy interview, Ryan explained how he wants to be more accountable and how connecting with other addicts on social media have helped him throughout his recovery. He was surprised at how much positive messages he received and still attempts to answer them. He believes that the vulnerability he showed following the humiliation of the arrest and his relapse has helped him feel more connected with others.
Ryan also admitted that being a retired player, he felt like he didn’t need to follow certain lifestyle rules and thought he could “probably drink again."
“I just took it for granted and it got away from me.”
The Wally and Methot show opens with Ryan’s interview and it is definitely worth watching:
Ryan was awarded the NHL’s Masterton Trophy previously after a battle with alcohol abuse. The award goes to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. He knows he can do this. Back in February 2020, then-Ottawa Senators Ryan admitted to dealing with alcohol addiction and finally getting some help. He took an extended leave of absence from the Senators starting in November 2019 to enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, citing his issues with alcohol abuse. In a shortened season, due to COVID, Ryan still managed to put up eight points in 24 games.
Ryan played in the NHL since his last game as a member of the Detroit Red Wings on March 28, 2021. And right now, he must focus on his sobriety and not hockey - though he did take part in some hockey chat during his interview with Wally and Methot.
We are thinking of him and encourage him to keep on this positive path of sobriety.
