Ever since Auston Matthews put ink to paper in Toronto, all eyes have turned to his Maple Leafs teammate William Nylander as he heads towards free agency after this upcoming NHL season. Nylander has spent his entire career in Toronto and is now entering the last year of the six-year, $45 million deal signed back in 2018, and could have agreed to a new deal since July 1st.

As of now, no real progress made in contract negotiations and of course, the rumour mill has been spinning with Toronto media adding fuel to the fire.

Toronto journalist Michael Traikos, managing editor of The Hockey News team sites, has put in own spark on the situation with an intriguing mock trade, suggesting Nylander could join the rival Montreal Canadiens for a monster return.

“[In case of a trade] Canadiens’ fans won’t like the return! I believe that the names [Cole] Caufield, [Juraj] Slafkovsky, and [Kaiden] Guhle would be in the discussions.”

Fans quickly reacted to the exorbitant deal and cannot imagine the rebuilding Habs to give up these three promising players. Especially if Nylander then refuses to stay in Montreal and still leaves during free agency.

But even then! Even if Nylander does choose to stay with the Canadiens, it means that the team will to put up close to $10 million annually to keep him… It is too staggering! - If anyone bothers to ask me.

I wouldn’t be the trigger on that proposed blockbuster trade. And I can’t imagine Kent Hughes would either.
