Blockbuster trade brewing in Buffalo as they kick off season today!
Could we see the first monster transaction of 2024-25 sooner than we expected?
The Buffalo Sabres are kicking off their 2024-25 season on Friday with the first of two games in the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia against the New Jersey Devils. Busy has picked off and, according to Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic, this could mean a significant trade could be coming in Buffalo.
Fairburn points out that the Sabres have over $7 million in salary-cap space and plenty of prospects to draw on for trade bait.
Earlier this summer, it was believed that the Sabres were looking to acquire a top-six forward and general manager Kevyn Adams could revisit that possibility.
“How strong the rental market will be depends on what happens early in the season, but Adams has the assets to make a move if Buffalo is in contention. He also has roster players who are in the final seasons of their deals, notably Jordan Greenway, who could be attractive trade chips if Adams wants to shake the roster up at any point. I think we’ll see a significant Sabres trade at some point, but there are a lot of variables at this point.”
As Fairburn explains, there is also the fact that the organization has several roster players in the final seasons of their contracts, including Jordan Greenway, who could be huge as an interesting trade bait if Adams works to make a trade happen. Especially if Buffalo can turn into a playoff contender. Buffalo hasn’t qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2011, the longest current drought in the NHL.
During the offseason, as the Sabres were looking at the market to acquire a top-six forward, rumours linked them to Philadelphia Flyers’ Joel Farabee and could always revisit that possibility as the seasons gets underway.
This will be an interesting one to keep an eye as the campaign unfolds.
