Despite having the captaincy stripped away from him this offseason, you certainly can't say that Winnipeg Jets veteran forward Blake Wheeler doesn't have guts. Or in this case, some serious balls.
It was recently revealed that the former Jets captain suffered a ruptured testicle during the December 15 game against the Nashville Predators in which he accidentally blocked a shot by teammate Josh Morrissey. Wheeler, who hasn't suited up since, managed to somehow finish the game despite the shocking injury.
“Well, there’s a difference between being hurt and being injured. I didn’t know I was injured until the next day,” Wheeler told reporters on Thursday.
“It’s something I don’t want to go through again and wouldn’t wish on anyone, but I just feel really grateful that our medical staff and the doctors we have in town took good care of me and [were] able to get everything taken care of and back as soon as I was able to.”
Despite Wheeler's absence, the resurgent Jets continue to chug along under the guidance of 1st year Jets coach Rick Bowness. They're currently ranked 2nd overall in the NHL's Central Division with a record of 24–13–1 record and 49 points.
The good news is that Wheeler is expected back tonight for their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
