Blackhawks/Panthers trade looking like a robbery after poor start for Seth Jones.
It is starting to look like the Chicago Blackhawks may have robbed the Florida Panthers.
There weren't many who believed that Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson would be able to pull off the Seth Jones trade mid-season but, not only did Davidson manage to execute the trade under difficult circumstances, that trade is quickly starting to look like a steal on the part of the Blackhawks.
Now to be clear it is still extremely early and we only have small sample sizes to judge by thus far, but there's no doubt that the centerpiece of that deal, former Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones, is off to a terrible start with his new team, the Florida Panthers.
On Sunday night, Blackhawks insider Scott Powers highlighted exactly just how poor Jones' first 7 games with the Panthers have gone with Powers pointing out that the Panthers have been outscored 6-1 at even strength over those first 7 games. Additionally, Powers highlighted that Jones only has a 41.61 expected goals percentage, definitely not the start either Jones or the Panthers were hoping for when the trade was made.
It isn't like Jones has been lighting the world up offensively since joining the Panthers either, with the 30 year old blue liner recording just a single assist so far despite eating up significant minutes for the Panthers. Jones has been averaging over 24 minutes of ice time a night but only has that single point and a plus minus rating of -4 to show for it so far.
Making Jones' poor start look even worse by comparison is the fact that Spencer Knight, who was sent to Chicago alongside a first round pick in exchange for Jones and a fourth round pick, has very much been living up to expectations in Chicago. Knight has only appeared in 4 games for the Blackhawks thus far but looks very much like he could be their goaltender of the future with a 2.24 goals against average and a .928 save percentage over that stretch.
It is of course far too small a sample size and far too early to hit the panic button if you're the Florida Panthers, but I can guarantee you that the Blackhawks aren't the least bit upset about how this trade has worked out for them so far.
