On Saturday night former National Hockey League defenseman Kevin Bieksa created a bit of a stir when he offered up a dissenting opinion during a Hockey Night in Canada panel. The panel was discussing a bizarre goal that occurred on Saturday night during a game contested between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres, one that after a series of reviews went from being ruled no goal and a penalty for the Sabres, to a good goal for the Leafs which resulted in no penalty for the Sabres.
First let's take a look at the goal itself for those of you who didn't get a chance to see it live:
Bieksa made it clear after the review that he did not like the call that had been made.
"I don't like this," said Bieksa during the intermission. "I understand what we're trying to do now with the net coming off... maybe I'm a traditionalist."
"The net goes off which I get sucks and it's delay of game penalty... but like 6 minutes later Giordano gets a breakaway against an imaginary net and the puck goes in through the imaginary net? This is like my brothers in my grandparents basement playing mini-sticks."
"The puck goes in and doesn't hit the post because it's not there, so it goes through the imaginary post?" asked Bieksa. "What are we doing here?"
Following the game itself Bieksa took issue with one Twitter account that claimed he said the goal should not have counted, something that the former defenseman objected too. Bieksa clarified that he agreed it should count based on the current rules in the NHL, and then proceeded to double down on his comments about not liking the decision that was made.
"Didn’t say it should NOT have counted," wrote Bieksa. "Under new rules it SHOULD count. But, I don’t like the rule. Go to bed Tim."
Do you agree with Bieksa's hot take on this particular rule? Or does the league have it right?
