Sam Gagner is 33 games shy of reaching the 1,000 games played mark and it looks like he’ll reach the milestone with the Winnipeg Jets. On Friday, the Jets announced they had signed Gagner to a one-year, $750K contract.

This is another move for the 33-year-old forward who spent the last three season with the Detroit Red Wings.

Chatter had previously linked him back to the Edmonton Oilers this offseason. GM Ken Holland was reportedly looking to add more depth to his roster and Gagner could have been an option to return to Edmonton. He spent seven years with them after being drafted by them sixth overall back in 2007 before returning in 2019 for parts of two more seasons. With 317 points in 542 games with them, he sits 21st on their all-time scoring list.

But Winnipeg came with an offer and Gagner is off the free agency board, stating the 2022-23 season as a Jet.

Last season with Detroit, Gagner put up 13 goals and 18 assists in 81 games, all but two of those coming at even strength. This kind of depth scoring will help out the Jets, no doubt.

Between his first stint with the Oilers and his three-year stay in Detroit, Gagner moved around a bit playing for the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Vancouver Canucks.

Here’s to a new start in Winnipeg this time.
