Another monster trade scenario emerges in Boston following elimination!

What happened to the Boston Bruins in the first round of the postseason isn’t something fans expected. And I guess they also did not expect to hear monster trade scenarios and rumours emerge out of Boston, like the idea that GM Don Sweeney could move forward Brad Marchand in the offseason.

However, the Bruins need to stock up on draft picks for the near future, having spent most of them on Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway on the trade market. Boston is also left with many unrestricted free agents to re-sign : Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Nick Foligno, Tomas Nosek, Connor Clifton, Bertuzzi, Hathaway and Orlov, and it is clear that Sweeney won’t be able to re-sign them all.

That’s why Lyle Richardson of the Hockey News believes the Bruins could “consider one or two cost-cutting moves. One of them could involve Linus Ullmark.”

While many expect Ullmark to win the Veniza Trophy this season, he struggled in the postseason and his name was once mentioned in trade circles and could return. According to insider Jimmy Murphy, the Bruins listened to trade offers last summer for Ullmark but decided against moving him. Boston might however choose to RFA Jeremy Swayman as their number one goalie moving on, and trade Ullmark, whose contract contains a full no-movement clause in the first two years. It reverts to a 16-team no-trade on July 1.

Ullmark is currently halfway through a four-year contract with an average annual value of $5 million, and it is clear he would be worth so much more on the trade market, drawing tons of interest from rival clubs.

Sweeney would be free up valuable cap space in order to make other signings if he chooses to move Ullmark. But that would be a monster move in itself if it happens in Boston this summer…
