Another former member of the Maple Leafs joins the Oilers!
On a PTO. He will crack the roster?
Rumours had recently surfaced that the Edmonton Oilers were brining in another defenseman on a professional tryout agreement, and finally on Friday, the team confirmed that they had offered a PTO to Travis Dermott.
Dermott, a left shot defenseman, spent most of his career in Toronto after the Maple Leafs selected him in the second round, 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, 30 selections after the team picked Mitch Marner. He was part of the organization from 2015 to 2022, when he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for a third round pick.
Unfortunately in Vancouver, Dermott was limited to just 28 games with the Canucks over two seasons with one additional contest with the farm team in the AHL.
Last season, Demott ended up signing with the Arizona Coyotes and played in 50 games, collecting seven points and averaging over 17-minutes a night.
He comes in to Edmonton as a free agent with a chance to crack the roster and could have an advantage on other players who are coming in on a PTO. Dermott played under Oilers head coach Kris Knobluach for three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters. He also played with onnor McDavid for a pair of seasons in Erie, and was also a teammate of Connor Brown with the Otters, Marlies and Maple Leafs.
I guess we will find out soon if Dermott can earned a contract in Edmonton.
