Goaltender Jack Campbell’s assignment to the American Hockey League was supposed to build back his confidence and get him back on track to rejoin the Edmonton Oilers with new energy and thirst for success. Well, so far, it ain’t going according to plans!

Campbell endured another tough outing as his Bakersfield Condors fell 6-3 to the Calgary Wranglers on Tuesday night. The poor goalie allowed five goals on 26 shots and lost his third straight start since he was placed on waivers by the Oilers back on Nov. 7. He allowed four goals in each of his first two games for the Condors.

His stats are just awful: Campbell has recorded an .819 SV% (13 goals on 72 shots) through three AHL contests.

I’m not sure what’s next for Campbell, who hasn’t a much better record in the NHL this season. When he was placed on waivers, he had a 1-4-0 record with a .873 save percentage and a 4.50 goals-against average.

It feels like the Campbell experiment in Edmonton was all of huge mistake. The goalie is currently in the second season of a five-year, $25 million contract signed with the Oilers as a free agent in 2022…

However, it was reported last week by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that general manager Ken Holland met with Campbell before the waiver transaction and expects the goalie to improve and find his way back to the Oilers’ lineup during his reassignment down to the minors.

But, come on Campbell : you have to do MUCH BETTER than this…

The pressure is on for Campbell, though it isn’t the first time he needs to win back the crease in Edmonton. Last season, he was taken over by Skinner, who hasn’t been all that better in 2023-24.

Campbell must find his confidence, improve his play and get back in the Oilers’ dressing room.

There is no other way but up at this time. Right?
