Andrei Svechnikov reportedly on the verge of a monster extension

Since being selected second overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Carolina Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov has been one of the most consistent forwards on their roster. He's currently a restricted free-agent, and if this report out of his native Russia is to be believed, he's about to make some serious bank over a long-term contract. 

According to Sports.Ru, Svechnikov is on the verge of agreeing to an eight-year contract with the Hurricanes.

"Forward Andrei Svechnikov will sign a new contract with Carolina. The term of the agreement will be calculated for 8 years, according to the journalist of "Sport-Express" Artur Khairullin.  In 55 games of the 2020/21 season, Svechnikov scored 42 (15 + 27) points, and added 8 (2 + 6) points in 11 NHL playoff games.  The club had previously made him a qualifying offer."

So far in his young career, Svechnikov has tallied 59 goals and 140 points in 205 regular season games with nine goals and 20 points in 26 playoff games. Prior to his arrival in the NHL, he earned the 2017-18 CHL Top Prospect Award and was named OHL Rookie of the Year.

He's coming off of his three-year entry level contract that saw him earn an annual salary of $925,000. 

"This an exciting moment for our organization," Hurricanes president and general manager Don Waddell said after his initial deal was agreed upon. "Andrei is the type of elite talent that you can build a team around. He has a bright future in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform."

Would the Hurricanes be wise to level such a commitment to Svechnikov, or would they be better advised trying to go the route of a bridge deal?
