It was shocking news on Friday morning when Paul Maurice resigned as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. According to TSN insider Darren Dreger, the reason behind Maurice’s departure when first announced was not sinister. Finally, the explanation came from Maurice himself who held a press conference to reveal why he was leaving the Jets, stating that the team needs a new voice. He is stepping down because he feels the Jets deserve better.
“This is a good team, I’m a good coach…but sometimes you can only push so far. Sometimes a team needs a new voice. They haven’t quit on me, but need a different voice. It’s the right time for it, and I know that.
“This was 100% my decision.
“I love these guys, I love this place. I know that it’s time.”
He does not believe he is the right guy anymore. This is probably one of the first time a coach can be honest and true like that. What a guy!
When asked about the future, Maurice was not able to answer if he is done as an NHL head coach at the moment. He admitted not liking it as much, struggling with the absence of fans last year in the COVID pandemic, and feeling that his players, whom he loves, deserve better. He started finding it tougher to come to the rink, adding that he's not embarrassed by it, but recognized that the players, organization and city deserved more.
"I did a good job here. I'm proud of my work.
"It was a great day when I got hired by the Jets -- for the Jets and for me. Today's a great day, too. For the Jets and for me as well."
Maurice was in his ninth season as head coach of the Jets, having led his team to the postseason in each of the past four years.
The Jets are currently in fifth place of the Central Division with a 13-10-5 record, three points behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Dave Lowry replaces Maurice on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. The former head coach has no doubt he will do well in the new role.
Very classy exit by Maurice.
