Washington held on Friday the Gr8 City Celebration in honor of Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin becoming the NHL’s All-Time goals leader. Ovechkin scored his record-breaking 895th career goal against the New York Islanders at UBS Aren and broke Wayne Gretzky’s 31-year-old record in his 1,487th career game, the exact number of games Gretzky finished his career with. It’s been a celebration in Washington ever since and on Friday, the Caps’ captain got a chance to thank his teammates and the city, but also wanted to have some fun.

Upon taking the stage, Ovechkin was very grateful, but also looking to entertained as he spoke directly to Capitals owner Ted Leonis, telling him he might just sign another 13-year contract extension with the Capitals.

Ovechkin has another season remaining after this one on the five-year, $47.5 million contract ($9.5 million average annual value) he signed in 2021. What happens beyond that depends on him whether he will look to entend here in the NHL or do as he once said, returning to Dynamo Moscow in Russia to play after he retires from the NHL.

Currently sitting fourth in goals in the league with 42 in 61 games, Ovechkin now looks to focus on the postseasons as his Capitals are heading back for another shot at the Stanley Cup.

However on Friday, Ovechkin is celebrating with the city of Washington, fans and his teammates, past and present. He shared a special moment with Nicklas Backtrom, who told Ovechkin today, “I love you.” Ovi said he said back, “I love you more.”
