The Pittsburgh Penguins were in need of goaltending depth after they traded Casey DeSmith to the Montreal Canadiens as part of the deal that brought Norris Trophy winning defenseman Erik Karlsson aboard.

New president of hockey operations and acting general manager Kyle Dubas turned to the Motor City for that depth, signing both Alex Nedeljkovic and Magnus Hellberg to separate one-year contracts. The former had just completed a two-year contract with the Red Wings after being acquired in a surprising 2021 trade, while Hellberg is coming off his second stint in Detroit last season that also included stops with the Seattle Kraken and Ottawa Senators.

For Nedeljkovic, who struggled for most of last season and was not retained by Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman, he'll be looking to prove that his subpar numbers were an anomaly and that he can still carve out a successful NHL career.

And he's released his very first Penguins mask artwork, which was painted by his usual Michigan-based artist in Ray Bishop of Bishop Designs, who has included the likes of Jimmy Howard, former Michigan Wolverine Al Montoya, Nikolai Khabibulin, former Michigan State Spartan Ryan Miller, and several others among his list of clients.

In 104 career NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Red Wings, Nedeljkovic has posted a record of 42-38-15 with a 2.96 goals against average and .907 save percentage with seven shutouts.
