Agent for Ilya Mikheyev is working on a trade

The speedy forward's time in Vancouver is over.

According to a report from Vancouver Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal, player agent Dan Milstein has been granted permission to facilitate a trade for forward Ilya Mikheyev.

From Dhaliwal this morning:

The 29 year old Mikheyev has two seasons left on a four year contract with a $4.75 million cap hit that he signed with the Canucks as a free agent in the 2022 offseason. The speedy forward had a productive, if not short, season with the Canucks in the first year of his deal but he failed to find a permanent spot on the roster this past season. He managed 13 goals and 28 points in just 46 games during an injury plagued 2022-23 season, but just 11 goals and 31 points in 78 games this past season. He spent parts of the campaign on the Canucks' top line with Elias Pettersson and Andrei Kuzmenko (before Kuzmenko was traded to the Calgary Flames), but failed to find any real chemistry.

It appears now that the Mikheyev experiment in Vancouver is coming to an end, given that the Canucks could desperately use his cap space to sign pending unrestricted free agents Nikita Zadorov and/or Elias Lindholm. There are also rampant rumors that the Canucks will heavily pursue pending free agent Jake Guentzel on the open market.

Any way you slice it, the Canucks can gain themselves some serious cap flexibility if they can manage to move out Mikheyev without taking any salary back in return. Stay tuned.
