Evander Kane will sit on the sideline for three to four months after being cut on the left wrist by a skate blade earlier this week. The Edmonton Oilers’ forward was rushed to a hospital and underwent a procedure Tuesday when his wrist was lacerated by Tampa Bay Lightning’s Pat Maroon during the game that night. Right away, Kane frantically skated to his team’s bench as a pool of blood was visible on the ice almost immediately.
Kane later issued a statement, expressing gratitude for the treatment he received in Tampa.
On Wednesday night, ahead of the Oilers’ game against the Hurricanes in Carolina, head coach Jay Woodcroft gave an additional update on Kane, revealing how the forward was feeling and what was next for him. This is what the bench boss said, per Sportsnet’s Gene Principe.
“I talked to him and he’s in good spirits. He’s meeting us down in Florida. He drove there and then will fly home with us.”
The Oilers will indeed be in Florida on Saturday to take on the Panthers and will then fly back to Edmonton for a two-game home stand before they get back on the road.
And we all know, those contests will all be without Kane in the lineup. Before the gruesome injury, he had put up five goals and eight assists over 13 games this season. He is in the first year of a four-year, $20.5-million contract he signed this summer after joining Edmonton mid-season last year.
