According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras is seeking a second opinion on his knee injury suffered last week. Zegras evidently wasn't satisfied with the diagnosis that his team's medical staff provided and so he'll seek additional opinions outside the organization.
From Seravalli:
The 23 year old forward has just four goals and 10 points in 24 games and has been sidelined since suffering an apparent knee injury on December 4th. You may recall that he missed most of last season as well after undergoing ankle surgery. He played just 31 games last season, putting up 15 points.
The highly skilled forward has struggled to find consistency under head coach Greg Cronin and there are constant reports that his personality clashes with the team's coaching and management staff. Now with Zegras electing to seek opinions outside the organization you have to imagine that the strained relationship between him and then team will become even more strained.
I'm all for players seeking their own treatment outside of the traditional team Doctor confines. I was a big proponent of Jack Eichel pushing the Buffalo Sabres and then Vegas Golden Knights for his preferred treatment method when it came to his chronic neck issue and I'll back Zegras in his pursuit of a second opinion, as well. Having said all that... this kid HAS to know that he'll face backlash for this, right? A certain percentage of the team's fanbase already views him as a petulant, spoiled kid and this isn't going to help matters.
Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of the fit between Zegras and the Ducks anymore. But then again, I'm not sure what to make of the Ducks organization from top to bottom. They seem no closer to competing for a Stanley Cup than they did when they began their rebuild five years ago. The Ducks have amassed some good young talent, but they can never seem to take a step forward and they once again look like a team that is long for the bottom of the NHL's standings once against this season.
