It came as a surprise last week when the New York Islanders decided to part ways with legendary head coach Barry Trotz. And it didn’t take long to hear chatter about rival teams already chasing the head coach to get him to sign and lead the way behind their bench.

In recent chatter, it’s been reported that the Winnipeg Jets and Philadelphia Flyers are trying hard to hire Trotz. It was almost evident that the Jets were going to try and land him: Trotz’s Manitoba roots could be a reason to convince the talented head coach to take the job with Winnipeg. He had an interview with the Jets on Tuesday, however he left without a deal.

As for the Flyers, they are set to have an interview with Trotz soon and are believed to consider him their first choice to take over behind the bench in Philly.

On Friday, Nick Kypreos reported that six or seven teams “have reached out to Barry Trotz camp.

Clubs under the impression the price tag could fall in the $6 million per range.”

That’s because Trotz is definitely worth it, he who went to the Islanders after leading the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2018. Prior to coaching in Washington, Trotz was the inaugural coach of the Nashville Predators, a team he managed for 15 seasons.

Six to seven teams sounds like a lot, especially seeing that only 5 teams have vacancy at the head coaching position. The Vegas Golden Knights are looking for a coach after firing Peter DeBoer following a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Rick Bowness just announced that he wouldn’t return to the Dallas Stars, while the Jets, Flyers, and Detroit Red Wings also need to find a new head coach.

I wonder who else is getting in the mix for Trotz’s services…
