4 teams linked to Marc-Andre Fleury in latest trade rumours

Marc-Andre Fleury became the NHL’s second-winningest regular season goalie after the Minnesota Wild defeated the New York Islanders 5-0, earning his 552nd career win and surpassing Patrick Roy. On Tuesday during the Insider Trading on TSN edition, he became the center of trade talk as there is a sense he could be traded to a Stanley Cup-contender before the March 8 trade deadline.

Pierre LeBrun reached out to Wild general manager Bill Guerin to ask about Fleury’s availability ahead of the trade deadline and if the veteran goalie could be on the move for a chance to win a fourth championship prior to hanging up the pads. While Guerin remains adamant that Minnesota is still in the mix for a playoff spot and could go on for a run into the postseason, he admitted to LeBrun that teams could come calling for Fleury in the weeks and days prior to March 8.
The truth is, Fleury and his agent are the ones in control. This is how LeBrun explained it:

“Guerin acknowledged that, yes, if they fall out of it, he expects teams to call and he expects to have a discussion with Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury has to have that discussion in the next couple weeks with his agent, Allan Walsh. They have a full no-move (clause), it’s up to Walsh and Fleury if he goes anywhere before the deadline, and we don’t know the answer to that yet. But there’s some obvious teams to think about, Toronto tried to trade for him two years ago. Different GM, but nevertheless, the Leafs still have question marks in goal. Edmonton, how about a mentor to Stuart Skinner? New Jersey, they haven’t had saves all year. Carolina, how about a mentor to (Pyotr) Kochetkov? So, there are some obvious places where Marc-Andre Fleury would fit if he has a meaningful role, he’s not going to waive to be a backup who doesn’t play. We’ll see where this goes.”

Fleury has yet to decide about his future in the NHL beyond this season, on which he’s posted a career-worst .897 save percentage. In recent years, he’s known all too well about the trade deadline chaos when he was moved to the Wild at the 2022 trade deadline after a controversial move from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Chicago national in the summer of 2021.

Once approached by the Maple Leafs, Fleury had turned down the offer from Toronto, but could take a second look this season and cherish the opportunity to mentor a struggling player like Ilya Samsonov. In Edmonton too, he could be a great mentor to Stuart Skinner and upcoming star prospect Olivier Rodrigue.

The same could be said of the New Jersey Devils, who are actively looking for an upgrade in net and the Carolina Hurricanes, who could have Fleury mentoring Pyotr Kochetkov.

Being a beloved goalie and teammate across the league, any team would be lucky to land Fleury for a postseason run. The future Hall of Famer was selected first overall by the Penguins in 2003 and spent the first 13 years of his career in Pittsburgh, winning three Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, 2017). He was selected by the Golden Knights in the 2017 expansion draft and brought them to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural campaign. Before he was moved to Chicago, he won the Vezina Trophy.

Who wouldn’t want Fleury on their roster???
