3 goaltenders for Canada's Olympic roster revealed.
Canada's goalies in 2022.
The Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China are drawing closer and closer and although for many hockey fans the event has already lost much, if not most, of its luster due to the lack of National Hockey League participation there is still quite a bit of buzz surrounding the games.
Earlier this weekend we got a look at some of the names that were expected to participate for Team Canada at the Men's Hockey Tournament with 10 names being revealed, all of which were either forwards or defensemen. If you missed our earlier report on that topic, here are the players that are expected to play.
First here are the forwards:
Kent Johnson
Adam Cracknell
David Desharnais
Landon Ferraro
Eric Staal
Daniel Winnik
Daniel Carr
And the defensemen:
Owen Power
Jason Demers
Mark Barberio
On Sunday we learned the identities of 3 additional players that will join this roster of men at the Winter Olympic Games, although this time the names revealed belong to those who will stand between the pipes for the Canadian squad. Here are your 3 goaltenders for the upcoming tournament in no particular order:
Devon Levi
Edward Pasquale
Matt Tomkins
I'll be honest Devon Levi is far and away the most interesting name on this list for me. The 20 year old Florida Panthers prospect has been having an outstanding season at Northeastern University, recording a 1.55 goals against average and a .948 save percentage over his 24 appearances. I don't expect he will be named the starter, although it would not shock me if he were, but he could very well end up stealing that job if he continues to play as well as he has all season.
I suspect that the favorite to earn the starting role will be the 31 year old Pasquale who has been playing with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of the Kontinental Hockey League for the past 2 seasons. He has also put up solid numbers this season with a 1.99 goals against average and a .916 save percentage, and has done so against tougher competition than you would expect to face at the NCAA level.
Last but not least in 27 year old Matt TOmkins who has been playing in the Swedish League with Frolunda HC. Over his 23 appearances he has a 2.32 goals against average and a .913 save percentage, and I suspect he will be at the bottom of the depth chart when it comes to the 3 goaltenders.
