A 29 year old hockey player has been the victim of what law enforcement officials are describing as a particularly brutal and cruel murder.

A report from Finnish news outlet Ilta Sanomat has revealed that 29 year old Janne Puhakka, the first openly gay man to ever play in the Finnish Elite League, has been killed. According to the report, the primary suspect for the killing appears to be Puhakka's partner, a 66 year old Norwegian veterinarian named Rolf Nordmo.

Nordmo was arrested at the scene of the crime after a concerned citizen placed a phone call to emergency services, Nordmo surrendered peacefully and was arrested without incident.

The investigation is being led by Matti Högman who provided some details regarding the nature of the crime to journalists, indicating that Nordmo appeared to be of sound mind and judgement when the act was committed over the weekend. Hogman also informed reporters that the nature of the killing appeared to be particularly cruel.

"We suspect sound judgment and a particularly brutal and cruel way of doing things," said Hogman as per Ilta Sanomat.

Although likely not well known to most fans in North America Puhakka did briefly play in North America, spending two seasons with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League roughly a decade ago. Puhakka was however best known for being the first player to play in the SM-liiga, also known as the Finnish Elite League, to be open about his homosexuality. Puhakka most recently played during the 2017-18 season as a member of Gap HC in France's top hockey league.

My condolences go out to his friends and family, and I can only hope that the perpetrator of this terrible crime will face justice.
