Xhekaj and Olivier clash in epic heavyweight showdown.
Two of the National Hockey League's toughest men went toe to toe and blow for blow on Saturday night.
If you were left disappointed by the other heavyweight fight this weekend, looking at you Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, then have no fear because two of the National Hockey League's toughest customers delivered in a big way on Saturday night.
The Columbus Blue Jackets took on the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday night and during the game's second period we were treated to a heavyweight showdown between Blue Jackets enforcer Mathieu Olivier and Habs enforcer Arber Xhekaj. There was no incident that proceeded this clash between the two, with the fight seemingly occurring at random off of a face off roughly midway through the second period, but both men were clearly ready and willing to drop the gloves against one another.
Both fighters would trade heavy shots in this one with the pair looking like Rock'Em Sock'em robots in the early going of the fight, but it would be Olivier who would once again establish himself as one of the most dangerous fighters in the league. Olivier caught Xhekaj with a mean right that dropped the Canadiens enforcer to one knee, but to Xhekaj's credit he would regain his feet and continue the exchange for a few more seconds before the officials finally stepped in to stop the carnage.
As Xhekaj headed to the box there was a cut visible on his left cheek, likely from that powerful right hand he absorbed from Olivier, and he could be seen icing his hand in the penalty box as well.
As mentioned Olivier may very well be the most feared fighter in the NHL today and his win over Xhekaj tonight only further cements his status as one of the league's top pugilists. Fans will likely remember Olivier largely derailing what was the Matt Rempe hype train last season when he demolished the much bigger man during Rempe's ascension to stardom last season.
