The Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed late last night that they will be without Ryan Reaves for some time. The veteran forward sustained a freak injury in the first period of the team’s 6-5 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday and more footage has emerged that has fans wondering if Reaves got injured a second time right after his exit from the ice.
It started off with Reaves skating close to the boards and looking like he lost control of his footing or maybe his skate got caught in a rut. He then collided hard into the boards and when he attempted to get get up and continue, he immediately dropped to the ice and play was whistled dead.
Reaves was unable to put weight on his left foot, skated on one leg to the Maple Leafs’ dressing room, but appeared to have trouble getting off the ice. Then footage went viral in which we can see what appears to be Reaves falling down a set of stairs on his way to the trainers’ room…
Fans also made jokes that the Maple Leafs wanted to make sure Reaves was really out of action by pushing him down the stairs, others hinting at a push onto Robidas’ Island, where many Leafs have found one-way tickets delivered to them, including Joffrey Lupul, Jared Cowan, Jake Muzzin, and goalie Matt Murray who have landed on Toronto’s LTIR, referred to as Robidas Island.
After the Maple Leafs’ overtime loss, head coach Sheldon Keefe didn’t have details of the injury but noted that the skater would be “out for a while.”
Reaves had just made a return after he was a healthy scratch during Toronto’s 7-3 win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old has just one single goal in 21 games this season, his first with the Maple Leafs. He signed a three-year, $4.05 million contract with the club on July 1.
I would understand if someone wanted to push him down the stairs… Just saying!
