On Wednesday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs managed a 6-2 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings. The game kicked off with the Maple Leafs coming out of the gate hot as they managed to take a 5-0 lead early on, only to ease off the accelerator and allowing the Kings back into the game with two straight tallies.

That’s why head coach Craig Berube had enough, took a 30 second timeout and completely lambasted his players for their lack of effort.

The speech, though it included several expletives, worked as Toronto didn’t surrender another goal and won 6-2.

On Thursday, the new Leafs bench boss revealed why he blasted his players, clearing things up on how it came to his outburst:

“It was a feel thing for me last night, I didn’t like what we were doing. I just wanted to get a break there and bring everybody in and talk a little bit about getting the intensity level up more than anything. They were pushing hard, I thought they pushed hard in the second period too. Our intensity wasn’t good enough.”

As Berube barked instructions and motivated his players to stay in this game, you could tell the whole bench was paying attention. This is refreshing to see in Toronto, a bench boss who does not fear to tell it how it is, and get the results. This means the Maple Leafs are buying into Berube’s well-known old school mentality and fans want to see more passion like this as the season unfolds.
