The Vancouver Canucks have bolstered their forward depth on the opening day of free agency.

In an official announcement, the Canucks and Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin announced that they have come to terms on a long term deal with former Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk. DeBrusk's new deal will carry a 7 year term and comes in at an average annual value and salary cap hit of $5.5 million per season.

The move will bring DeBrusk back closer to home and closer to family, with father Louie DeBrusk working the play by play for fellow Canadian National Hockey League team, the Edmonton Oilers, DeBrusk is also a native of Edmonton, Alberta and now won't have to worry about crossing the border when he wants to make trips back home.

The 27 year old former first round pick (14th overall) at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft is coming off of a down year for himself in the regular season, with his lowest scoring season in the past 3 years. DeBrusk recorded 19 goals and 21 assists for a total of 40 points over 80 games for the Boston Bruins last season, but finished strong adding an additional 5 goals and 6 assists for a total of 11 points over the course of the Bruins 13 playoff games.

It is an interesting move as the Bruins and Canucks appear to be swapping free agents today.
