One of the most interesting names that remained available this far into free agency was Tyler Motte, however, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has just revealed that the forward has signed a one-year deal with the Ottawa Senators. His colleague Luxe Fox points out that the deal is worth $1.35M.
It has recently been reported that Motte had garnered the interest of several teams on the market.
The 27-year-old was traded by the Vancouver Canucks to the Rangers at the trade deadline as New York loaded up for a playoff run. Despite having fewer than 300 games of experience to this point, Motte has been able to prove to be a full package for teams out there, and the Senators are hoping he’ll bring grit and power to the roster for the upcoming season.
Motte was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round of the 2013 draft and was eventually included in the deal that saw Artemi Panarin shipped to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was then moved again the following year to Vancouver in a deal for Thomas Vanek, where he became a regular, setting career-highs with nine goals and 16 points in the 2018-19 season.
Motte can be the perfect bottom-six option for a contender and the way Ottawa has taken over the offseason and made significant moves for a long playoff run: Motte might just fit in perfectly. Coming off a two-year, $2.45MM contract with the Canucks, Motte gets a pay cut, but with that comes the chance to fight for a contending team that has undergone a lot of changes this season.
